About Us

The Art Asylum                                                                                                                                                                                             The Vision

We saw the old neglected Victorian house on the corner and envisioned it as a beautiful 'painted lady', with an art gallery inside. We purchased the house in the winter of 2006. When we started to work on the inside of the house it seemed overwhelming; it soon became apparent to us that we must be crazy......hence The Art Asylum was born.
Once the inside was cleaned we began to paint walls, sand floors, and update the electricity. We were certain that we would be open by the first of April.  We were so wrong--the 'Open Soon' sign stayed in the front yard for so long; that everyone in the community knew that 'soon' must be an abstract term.
While waiting on 'soon' to arrive we began to paint the outside of of the gallery.
Weather; permits; inspections; more updates and empty pockets slowed our progress, but we did not give up. We were determined to open and focused on a July opening date. We started to  decorate and hang our art. In our spare time we continued  to create new art pieces, such as this soft scupture of Harold on the tricycle. Our dogs Cooper and Carolina stood close by cheering us onward!
July came and went, trains came  and went on the tracks and summer faded into fall . Finally, in October the outside of the gallery was painted (all except for one side) and we were ready to open.

By now we were all a little more crazy, but still having fun.

At last, opening day arrives:   November 3rd, 2007!       Muryl is waiting patiently on the front steps to give her first official tour.
Opening night was a huge success and sales exceeded our expectations!
